Happy (colourful) Feet

Happy Socks are a recently formed Swedish label currently attempting to conquer the world of fashion socks. We are told that they were created on a rainy Sunday afternoon (most of my best plans are hatched during this scene) and the label is determined to give the world a mood boost with a blast of colour. "We design the kind of socks we want to wear ourselves, simple as that”, says Creative Director Viktor Tell. There can be little doubt that colour has an affect on our moods but unfortunately we often over look our feet. I must admit that before I fell in love with the colours on offer at Uniqlo I only ever wore socks in monochrome shades...at a push navy but now I just love my colourful socks. However you like to dress your feet Happy Socks is well worth a visit. We hope that they don't just stop at conquering the world of fashion socks but go forth and the conquer the world. The time for a colourful sock revolution is now.

Star Siblings brighten up Sanjana Jon’s show

It was a touching moment when Sanjana Jon, the sister of jailed fashion designer Anand Jon, broke down during the show organized by her at the ongoing Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week. The show was a tribute to her brother, who has been sentenced to 59 years in prison.

The showstoppers for Sanjana Jon’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection show at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion week were brother duo Salman Khan and Sohail Khan, sister duo Raima and Riya Sen, and brother-sister duo Sushmita Sen and Rajiv Sen. Sarod maestro Aman Ali Khan and Ayan Ali Khan also showcased the creation by the designer.

This Is It - Movie Review

This Is ItCast: Michael Jackson
Director: Kenny Ortega
Rating: ***

This is it. The moment has arrived. For weeks there has been widespread speculation around the actual content of the musical documentary on Michael Jackson.

While director Kenny Ortega had announced that the film would give a sneak peek of Jackson's rehearsals for his concert series by the same name ("This Is It"), naysayers wondered if they would indeed get to see what was promised.

Conspiracy theories about a body double being used to make this film were all around as also that the movie "This Is It" was yet another means to cash in on the popularity of the legend who died June 25.

But this is not the case. The two-hour film features Jackson the way he was and there is no duplicate filling in for him. Yes, the horror of his failing health is pretty much visible in his weak body structure. However, what is certainly not missing is the man's energy, passion, determination and zeal to give it all to his fans.

"Love you all" and "God bless you" are mouthed frequently by the pop star who got his rehearsals captured on camera for his personal library. Now when the man is no more, these videos have been cut and edited to give audiences something to cheer about.

Seeing a parallel global release, the film captures Jackson in perhaps not his full glory since the spunk created in front of live audiences is always different from on-stage rehearsals.

However, what truly shocks is the fact that the man was pretty much alive, kicking and raring to go for his comeback concert. After seeing his moves, it is hard to believe that his health had deteriorated to such an extent that he met with a sudden death soon after.

"This Is It" is surely a treat for Jackson fans. For those who aren't, the film doesn't quite give any insight into the man's life since it is assumed that "This Is It" is mainly for those who were closely following his music and were prepared for the concert. So, if anyone is looking for a documentary on his life per se, then this really isn't it!

However, for those who were looking forward to the concert, this is not really a bad bargain. After all there are hit numbers like "Beat It", "Billie Jean" and many more that find a place in it. This becomes all the more interesting since Jackson comes up with new moves for these songs while making them further contemporary and presenting them to today's audiences.

The only thing that one misses as the film concludes is some more footage around comments from the people associated with the show. There are a few at the beginning but otherwise the film begins and ends like a concert video.

That was the intent of the feature for sure but it would have helped had audiences been given to know a little more about Michael Jackson - the man and not just Michael Jackson - the performer.

Aladin - Movie Review

AladinCast: Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandes, Saahil Khan, Ratna Pathak
Director: Sujoy Ghosh
Rating: ***

"I am still a teenager", says Amitabh Bachchan right at the beginning of "Aladin", setting the mood for the film to follow. Young at heart and fresh in treatment, "Aladin" wouldn't have been possible without him.

Playing Genius - The Genie could have gone either way since he is expected to be whacky, quirky, a little eccentric, a bit mad and hugely lovable.

The narrative is clearly divided into two sections. If the first half is more children friendly, the second half has a lot going for teenagers and above.

There is some fun in store for children with a donkey's head replacing Riteish's, his guitar turning into a frog and him being thrown in the air after being turned into a balloon. The funny antics that follow may not have grown ups rolling with laughter, but should surely keep the smiles on.

Amitabh's 'Yo dude' act keeps the fun going. He adopts a completely different body language as the flamboyant genie, who is happy moving on with the times, and could give the younger generation a run for its money.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Dutt's Ringmaster character makes on and off appearances, though one would have expected to see more of him.

The entire past about Aladin and the Genius gets a little confusing.

The real fun begins in the second half with the battle between good versus evil. Sanjay becomes more prominent on screen, the past is unearthed, action and thrills take centrestage and the best of VFX is unveiled.

The visuals belong to the never-seen-before variety, especially the ones where Big B is shown repenting about his misdeeds. The flashback sequence is extremely well done too.

Sujoy Ghosh does well in conjuring the imaginary world of 'Khwaish' that gives the film a visual appeal. This is further enhanced by the presence of newcomer Jacqueline Fernandes.

Riteish is likeable as the young man who gets superpowers towards the film's end, hence keeping an option for a sequel.

Sanjay is good but how one wishes that he had at least a couple of dramatic scenes with Amitabh.

However, the film completely belongs to Amitabh who totally steals the show. Watch him in "Genie Rap" and you'll know why.

The story of "Aladin" is legendary and Genie and Jasmine are known worldwide. This is why it requires courage for a filmmaker to set the film in contemporary times and come up with his own take on a well loved tale.

Ghosh does exactly that as he lets his imagination go wild and spins a tale that ends up relating the past, present and future of these characters. This VFX filled entertainer is just the right recipe if one is looking for a family entertainer.

Hrithik to make love with Monikangana Dutta

Hrithik to make love with Monikangana DuttaSanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish is turning out to be one hot project. After agreeing to sing for the first time on-screen with Aishwarya, Hrithik is all set to lock lips in an intimate scene as well. Alas, the lucky lady will not be the Bachchan bahu but hot bod model Monikangana Dutta who is playing his former love interest.

According to sources, “Although Aishwarya is paired opposite Hrithik, he has intimate scenes with Monikangana. As she plays Hrithik’s former love interest, Bhansali wanted their sizzling chemistry to be quite apparent.

Monikangana has a small but very important role and it was imperative that she has intimate lovemaking scenes with Hrithik.

Being a debutante actress, the model is nervous about her passionate scenes with the actor. The intimate scenes will be shot during the film’s next schedule in January in Goa but Bhansali has already briefed the two.

We hear that the lovemaking scene between Hrithik and Monikangana is far more crucial as Bhansali wants to highlight their love for each other in his film. Apparently, Hrithik’s wife Sussanne is aware about the passionate scenes and has spoken to Monikangana so that she is less nervous while shooting for them.

In Guzaarish, Hrithik plays a paraplegic suffering from impairments of the motor and sensory functions of the lower limbs. Aishwarya Rai plays his nurse in the movie.

Kareena finally forgives Abhishek Bachchan

Kareena finally forgives Abhishek BachchanKareena Kapoor seems to be on a patch up spree. Recently, when Kareena was on air for an exclusive interview with a TV channel, she was unperturbed and answered every question related to her past relationship with Shahid.

When asked if they are still in contact, she answered candidly, “No, we are not in touch. Shahid and I shared a wonderful relationship in the past, the least we can do is wish each other well. At least I know I do that from my side.”

But the story doesn't end here. After wishing her ex-flame well, she is now ready to mend ties with Bachchan junior as well.

Buzz is that the two have been signed for Abbas-Mustan’s untitled film, a remake of the Hollywood film, Italian Job. The movie will also star Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh in lead roles.

According to a source the director duo initially approached Saif Ali Khan to star with Bebo for the role but he did not have dates and he was replaced by Abhishek Bachchan.

Both actors made their acting debut together in Refugee and have been in the industry for years but have only starred together in two films till date.

While Kareena’s manager Zahid denies that she has signed the film, a source close to Abbas Mustan says, “The directors always had Kareena in mind and now they have managed to get Katrina on board too. The film will go on the floors in April and like every Abbas Mustan film, this too will also be shot on a lavish budget at international locations. The directors are clear about who they want to cast in the film.”

The Italian Job (2003) rights are with Studio 18. CEO Sandeep Bhargava of Studio 18 says, “We have the rights of Italian Job. Abbas Mustan are working on the script and will also direct the film. The movie will go on the floors sometime next year.”

Will Shamita be able to attend Shilpa's wedding?

Will Shamita be able to attend Shilpa`s wedding? There’s a chance that Shamita may not be able to attend her sister’s wedding. According to highly- placed sources at Colors there seems to be no provision to get a contestant out of a game show for a wedding.

Hard as it may be to believe, Shilpa Shetty’s kid-sister now locked away in Bigg Boss, is oblivious of the momentous developments in her star-sister’s life.

Says a highly-placed Colors source, “Shamita has not been told anything about Shilpa’s engagement or the marriage in the last week of November. As far Shamita knows the marriage was supposed to happen in December after the show was over.”

Now that Shilpa has approached the channel to evict her sister in time for the wedding—and a meeting between the two parties is on the cards this weekend—the channel bosses are at a loss as to how the rules can be bent to get Shamita out of the Bigg Boss house.

Says the source, “There’s a provision for a house-mate to be brought out in a case of an extreme emergency. It happened with Jade Goody last year. But does a sister’s unscheduled wedding qualify as a family crisis? We’re now wondering if the same rule as Jade can be applied to Shamita’s case.”

The international Big Brother rules are being consulted. If there’s no provision for a contestant to leave the game for a family wedding, them Shamita Shetty may not get the permission to leave Bigg Boss house for the wedding!

This however seems improbable, considering Shilpa’s old relations with the reality show. (She was contestant on Bigg Brother and hosted Bigg Boss 2).

Says the source from Colors, “After meeting Shilpa this weekend we’ll work out a strategy on Shamita’s eviction.”

According to plans if rules apply, Shamita’s eviction will be done live. “If an unexpected turn of events helps us boost our TRPs we’re certainly not shy of putting it on camera. We did with Jade Goody. We’ll do it with Shamita.”

The pop philosopher of the show Amitabh Bachchan is expected to do the needful. He will be breaking the news of Shilpa’s engagement and impending marriage to Shamita.

“The rest is up to Shamita. Once we’re sure she can be evicted whether she decides to come out or stay in the House is entirely her decision, ” ends the channel source.

Tom Ford scandalos

Tom Ford despre femei:
"I love women, I just don't fall in love with them, but I'm attracted to them, I find their bodies beautiful, and I can relate to them as the persued, because of course as a gay man you understand what it's like to be taken - to be an object to your partner - as well as what it's like to be the aggressor."
Tom Ford despre a fi gay:
"I have to say that I don't think gay is the most attractive word; If I were art-directing the creation of a word that would describe homosexuals, I think I would have tried to find another one. Gay makes us sound silly and frivolous, which is probably where it came from originally - it was first used in a Cole Porter song in the '30s - and I think it was probably a bit derogatory, and so it's not a word I necessarily like, but it's what I am, whatever."

Left feeling cold by wise words

Fashion156's latest editorial showing winter essentials by James Long and Melanie Broder.

During my obligatory Sunday call to my Grandparents where I hear about their weeks worh of trials and tribulations (who knew watching TV all day could be so hazardous and downright dangerous? I jest, I love my Sunday chats with the old folks.) my Nan warned me about that the cold weather on the way, she even mentioned snow. Snow in October, that's crazy talk...oh wait. As I was partaking in a pumpkin carving and soup making extravaganza on Wednesday night I noticed it getting cold, then it rained, then hailed, then snowed. It blew my fragile and somewhat excited little mind. I will never doubt my Nan again. Winter is upon us my friends. My calls for an early winter have been answered. Right on cue Fashion156 released their new issue, The Structured Issue and the editorial just makes me want to wrap up in giant knitted creations.

The chill factor makes me long for James Long's aw 08 collection

I've realised that even though I wanted Winter to arrive, I'm just not ready for it. I am going to James Long's AW 08 collection as my inspiration. I will go to war with the new chilly environment using a heady mix of sheepskin, suede, leather chunky knits and combining them with buckles and zips, to create my modern warrior look. This weekend will be a shopping filled one. More on this later...

The great outsider and collaborator

One of my current personal favourite designers is Watanabe. he can be considered a fashion outsider because he is something of an enigma and I think this is part of the attraction. I must admit that I've not really taken too much notice of him previously but now I am looking through his past creations and really enjoying what I'm seeing! Unfortunately menswear design is not really known for innovation but designers like Watanabe and (more recently)Throup are helping address this. I love how Watanabe deconstructs classics, for example taking apart white shirts or trench coats and exaggerating a facet or two, and then putting them back together for an entirely new and accomplished result. In an arena not exactly known for embracing groundbreaking innovation, Watanabe’s menswear has received particular acclaim. Although I like his s/s 2008 collection it is far too cold to be thinking about that season so I will concetrate on a/w 2007 and his bikerwear collection! As I've come to understand the 'Watanabe way' is to leave no sartorial cliché un-deconstructed, so he broke down the biker jacket into its component parts—collar, belt, zips, etc.—and put them back together in unexpected ways, reminiscent of The Clash.

This image is courtesy of men.style - Daft Punk on the catwalk? I'm in love with leather biker jackets right now and this show was one of the main reasons for this love to blossom.

Not content on concentrating merely on the leather biker jacket he looked at cloth versions and added numerous zips...as I've mentioned previously I adore zips.
Other than the search for the perfect biker jacket which is a tremendously difficult task because it is a classic and should be regarded as a staple for any man's wardbrobe I am looking for the right boots. I'm undecided between keeping to the biker theme or purchasing something a little more formal. I will keep you updated as to how my search goes and leave you with one more example of Watanabe's work...

Just look how Clash like this is!

"All I can do is be me, whoever that is."

Love him or loathe him most of us are going to be seeing and hearing alot about Bob Dylan in the coming months. With the new biopic being released soon (check out the trailer here) and the release of a number of 'new' Dylan albums.

I personally love him and there can be little doubt that he is more than just a music legend, he is a style icon too! Even women and not just Cate Blanchett want to get in on his style as seen on Catwalk Queen. There are many eras to Bob Dylan as shown by the recent biopic and this site (which I came across on my google search!) but for me there is only really one time in which Bob Dylan will be remembered for his style, mid 60s Dylan. he had just shaken off the Woody Guthrie and folky look and found a style of his own. He had the Wayfarers (which were back with a vengeance this summer!), he had the skinny jeans, the biker boots and he had the attitude of the Beat movement!

Playing Dylan during this time is (as I'm sure you have heard) Cate Blanchett. I've seen quite a few stills and she looks arguably the most Dylan like out of all the actors in this film. I've definitely seen a few female Dylan alikes around London over the last couple of months but Cate is definitely the best.

Anyway, back to men's style! I expect to see quite a few men's style magazines commenting on Dylan's style. I've not yet seen any but I will keep an eye on it. I think the mid 60s Dylan look is very wearable today and is pretty perfect for those days when you are not too sure what to wear or even on Saturday mornings when you are a little hungover.

Designers talk about the world of tomorrow

In light of the uncertain times ahead (more economy talk, I'm afraid but hear with me!) Men.Style.com have asked an eclectic mix of designers (ranging from Dries Van Noten to Yohji Yamamoto) for their predictions for men's fashion in the year ahead. We might all be sick of this constant recession talk but the points made here are much more interesting than the bog standard lazy journalism we have all been frustrated by in recent weeks and just look at the awesome illustrations (by a chap named Mickey Duzyj). The full feature can be read here.

My favourite illustrations on show...Browne, Simons and Yamamoto

Here is a summary of what the designers had to say...

Dries Van Noten - "There may, in parallel, even be a subtle slide toward the conceptual."

John Galliano - "Fashion has an insatiable appetite for change, for the new and for the innovative. Anything goes, as long as it's exciting."

Patrick Ervell - "From a creative standpoint, chaos and collapse can lead to great things and new beginnings. I think a little bit of creative destruction can be healthy and bracing."

Raf Simons - "We have to give the audience beauty and something to be excited about and something that stimulates."

Thom Browne - "I don't know what the future of men's fashion will be like. I just hope that everyone does their own thing… Because that is what I'm going to do."

Yohji Yamamoto - "Am I still going to be alive in 2009? I really hope so. I am a designer; I will go on designing until I die. This is my way of talking about 2009, 2010…"

What have I learned from all of this? Well, I've learned that I want nothing more than a Mickey Duzyj drawn comic charting the trials and tribulations of our favourite menswear designers!

Project Runway Episode 11: Best of the Not So Best

This week’s episode starts off with Christopher waxing philosophic about how the judges used to love his designs and now all they do is complain, they just don’t get his runway visions. Dear delusional Christopher: they do get it, your stuff is mostly pretty fug….Well brace yourselves dear Project Runway viewers, there are six designers and only one challenge left after this, and I’m still not sure which incompetent designer will be heading to Bryant Park thanks to some stellar irrational judging this season! There’s no question that Althea, Irina, and Carol Hannah all deserve to be in the top three, but whether design-challenged Gordana, repeat ‘bottom-two’ designer Christopher, or uninspired hot mess Logan will show at Fashion Week still remains to be seen…

It seems to be backwards day on Project Runway as the designers are presented with their new challenge while facing backwards. And hey, hasn’t Heidi worn that dress before? Anyways, Heidi wheels in their surprise in the form of dress forms displaying the designers’ best looking pieces from previous challenges, and they must create a companion piece that best compliments their original look, kinda like building a collection. Hmm, that sounds pretty boring, however maybe the point is to weed out the best from the not so best. For instance, Logan’s best look was a gown of cheap grey fabric and a single diagonal zipper, so Logan proceeded to purchase 40 zippers from Mood. Good luck.
Back in the workroom the air is filled with a little more competitive tension than usual. First Logan tells an unimpressed Althea that the pants she has draped look like Malvin’s pregnancy-chic ‘egg’ pants which got him eliminated in Episode 2. Then Althea secretly accuses Logan of stealing her ideas as his heavily zipped collar looks very much like one of her previous designs. I need to point out that in addition to Christopher, Logan is also delusional as he's confident he should show at Fashion Week because he has such a strong point of view. Wait, I’m sorry but I can’t remember any point of any of his views yet…

It’s Critique time and Tim helps Carol Hannah make some magic with a fabric addition suggestion. I can tell he really respects her as a designer. It’s really sweet and I’m jealous. Meanwhile Tim thinks Althea’s pants “look like they’re waiting for a diaper,” and Tim tells Christopher that his dress looks like the mother of his much younger winning dress from Episode 1. As Irina puts it perfectly: “Why is one dress throwing up the other?”

Talented Christopher at work on way too many petals

It’s Runway time and why on earth is Heidi wearing silver Bermuda shorts? Nick Verreos (PR alum and former host of my design school’s fashion show) and actress Kerry Washington (Why, why are you a fashion judge? Especially when we all know you have a stylist???) are this week’s judges, and all I’m saying is Michael better be back for next week’s final judging. Or else. So we begin with Logans’ zipper fest which is just tacky and overkill. Nina thinks it looks like an unflattering student fashion project while Nick envisions Judy Jetson. Irina’s tapestry dress and oversized camel sweater has a bit of the ‘unexpected’ but it’s oh so glam and very Aspen luxe. Meanwhile Gordana’s grey jacket with darts looks depressing as hell. She even managed to make her gorgeous Israeli model Matar look like Former U.S. President Grover Cleveland's wife Frances. Nina thinks the overall look is outdated and uninspiredly opposite from her original edgy and youthful look. By opposite I mean on a completely separate planet, filled with downers.

Carol Hannah’s cute cocktail dress with youthful oversized pockets is super chic and reminds Nick of Ava Gardner. Back on the ranch, Christopher’s dress is a tasteless disaster of Little House on the Prairie meets your wedding cake, with 3000 petals on top. Nina thinks it looks like a carnival float and the rest of the judges see two different gowns in one, one being a bed skirt. On a good note Heidi loooooves Althea’s sack-waisted pants and saggy oversized sweater look, which Irina then accuses Althea of copying from her Episode 10 Aspen winning look. Irina, you know there CAN be more than one sweater in this competition……

Christopher's original dress and 'inspired look'

Althea's Winning Design

I think the winning look really belonged to either Irina or Carol Hannah, but Heidi almost fell off her chair raving about Althea’s baggy outfit, so yes Althea is the Winner this week! In the bottom two are Gordana and Logan, and don’t even get me started on Christopher. Yes I know, he’s still in this competition. Can someone please call his parents to come pick him up already? Now for this week’s loser: Logan is finally OUT. Sorry Logan, you’re cute and all but you’ve put me to sleep more times than I can remember with your super blah designs and major lack of vision. It’s really too bad they couldn’t kick off Logan, Christopher, and Gordana all at once, kinda like an airline companion package. Three for the price of one……
